Oxford School District is working to make sure that no children in Oxford or Lafayette County go hungry when school is out. The Summer Food Service Programs this year will be held June 2nd- July 9th from 11:00am until 1:00pm at Oxford High School at 224 Bramlett Blvd and Oxford Middle School at 501 Martin Luther King Street. Theatre Camp sponsored by Tupelo Community Theatre will be held July 21-25. The camp will include instruction in drama, music, and theatre related art. The cost is $100 and scholarships are available. Call 844-1935 for more information.

 

The Itawamba County Development Council is proud to present the Mr. and Miss Firecracker Beauty Pageant at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Auditorium Saturday, June 28th at 1:00pm. There are categories for ages 0-18 and the pageant is open to anyone, not just residents of Itawamba County. United Way of Lowndes County is seeking volunteers for the Fireworks on the Water July 4th event presented by the United States Air Force, CAFB, the city of Columbus, and the Army Corps of Engineers. The event happens from 4-9pm at the Lock and Dam. You may assist in a number of ways from setting up before the event, selling beverages, or as a miscellaneous volunteer. The Mississippi Lions All State Band will present a free concert at 7pm, June 28th at the Davis Event Center on the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. The Lee County Dept. of Human Services, in an attempt to raise awareness of the need for foster parents, will have a booth at the Tupelo Furniture Market building on Coley Road during Flea Market weekend, Friday, July 11th from 5-9pm.

Thousands of Ham Radio operators will be demonstrating their emergency capabilities this weekend in an annual event called “Field Day.” In the Tupelo area, this event happens at 150 Lemmons Drive at Tupelo Regional Airport June 28th and 29th. For more information, go to www.emergency-radio.org.
 

Building Blocks at 3725 Cliff Gookin in Tupelo is the city’s new low cost building supply place. Purchases you make at this new store benefit the Learning Skills Center that helps children learn, stay in school, and prepare for college. Project Evergreen is now in its third year. This organization helps families of active duty troops keep up with lawn care by providing professional volunteers. The Natchez Trace Parkway has released their Summer 2008 Activities Schedule. The programs are offered through August 16th and include the Jr. Ranger Program which is held daily at 9am at the Natchez Trace Visitor Center. Other points of interest like the The Old Natchez Trace and Mississippi’s First School for Women allow you to join a ranger and learn more about these historic places. Remember that the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society Shelter in Tupelo is in need of volunteers and donations. The shelter is seeking individuals to help walk the dogs and asking for  donations of food, cleaning products, newspapers, pet toys and more. Basically anything you need to provide for your own pet, they need at the Tupelo shelter. Please call 841-6500 for more information.
